How to plan an itinerary through India

Choose regions and experiences for your trip to India. Compare durations and priorities to combine culture, landscapes and time to rest.

Start with priorities, not the entire map

Choose three interests you would like to explore: heritage, cuisine, urban life, cultural practices, nature or rest. Then count the days actually available in the country. These two pieces of information make it easier to distinguish what is essential from what can wait for another trip.

A first visit need not include every familiar image of India. Adding cities may reduce precisely the time you need to understand the places that inspired the trip.

The Golden Triangle as a focus, not a summary of the country

Delhi, Agra and Jaipur offer an introduction to heritage and different urban contexts. This combination is a selection: it does not represent all the country’s history, landscapes or cultural diversity.

If this is your main focus, choose an extension for what it adds. Varanasi, Rishikesh, Ranthambore and Udaipur are not interchangeable additions; each addresses a particular interest and requires its own logistics.

Examples of time allocation

The ranges below are editorial suggestions to start planning. They are not available packages or confirmed operational itineraries.

Days in the countryPossible focusImportant decision
6 to 8A focused Golden Triangle itinerary, depending on arrival and departure times.Allow time to rest and avoid adding multiple distant extensions.
9 to 12A cultural focus with one extension chosen according to your interests, or a more in-depth regional route.Compare travel time and the number of usable nights at each base.
13 to 16More time in one region or a combination with another area, such as Kerala, when flights and pace allow.Do not automatically fill every additional day with new cities.

A regional itinerary entirely in the south can also be a first trip. The Taj Mahal is a possibility, not a requirement for the experience to be worthwhile.

What needs to be confirmed

Check monument opening days, guide availability in your preferred language, train reservation status and safari permits. For festivals, confirm the date and how you will participate. For retreats, check the programme and the applicable documentation requirements.

If the itinerary leaves and re-enters India, check the visa and permitted entries before booking the services. An international extension is not simply a hotel change.

Compare equivalent proposals

Request the number of nights, room category and type, meals, admission, transport and guide services. Check which visits are exterior views and which include access inside. A lower price may reflect different services, rather than necessarily a better offer for the same programme.

Tell us about dietary restrictions, mobility, preferred pace and tolerance for very early starts. These details influence the design of the trip as much as the hotel choices.
