Planning
Best time to visit India: plan by region
Understand how regions, monsoons and activities affect a trip to India. Choose dates considering cities, Kerala, mountains and safaris.
The country is too large for a single recommendation
The best time depends on your route and what you want to do. Suitable conditions for walking around a city are not necessarily the same as for boating, a mountain activity or visiting a wildlife reserve.
Start by defining the regions. Only then compare periods, availability and budget. Choosing an “ideal month for India” without looking at the itinerary can conceal important differences.
Understanding the monsoons without oversimplifying
The India Meteorological Department distinguishes the southwest monsoon, mainly associated with June to September, from the northeast monsoon, from October to December, which is important for parts of the south. Rainfall distribution varies; it is not correct to reduce the country to a dry and a rainy season starting simultaneously everywhere. Source: IMD — introduction to monsoons.
The climate calendar is a planning tool, not a forecast of each day’s conditions. Before travelling, check forecasts and advisories for the places on your route with the India Meteorological Department.
Delhi, Agra and Rajasthan
For days with a lot of walking, compare forecast temperature, sun exposure and time in open spaces. Alternate activities, allow breaks and avoid concentrating all the major architectural complexes in a single part of the day.
Good planning also depends on opening hours and closure days. A favourable weather window does not solve an itinerary that reaches an attraction on the wrong day.
Rishikesh and the mountains
Activities beside a river and high-altitude routes require different assessments. Confirm the location, access conditions and operation of each activity. A city’s forecast does not replace guidance for a mountain route.
If the aim is a retreat or course, also consider the institution’s calendar. Do not choose the date based only on climate and assume every programme will be available.
Kerala and water activities
Consider where you intend to stay, the type of boating and whether you plan to visit the coast or mountains. A cultural itinerary can be adapted differently from a holiday centred on beaches or outdoor activities. Ask what alternatives are available if weather changes the programme.
Safaris and festivals
For Ranthambore, validate opening, permission and departure availability. For festivals, check the event’s city and year, as well as accommodation and transport. An attractive date may require more advance planning, but prices and demand need to be compared in actual proposals, not assumed.
