Transport in India: flights, trains and road journeys

Compare transport in India and organise reservations, baggage and connections. Understand why journey time and ticket status make a difference.

Compare the whole journey

Flight time or road distance does not represent the full duration of a journey. Add departure from accommodation, boarding procedures, travel, baggage collection and arrival at the next hotel. This calculation may change the choice between two apparently similar options.

The same applies to costs. A lower fare may require additional journeys, separate baggage charges or an overnight stay. Compare the complete route, not just the advertised price.

Trains: check reservation status

IRCTC’s conditions distinguish confirmed tickets, waiting list (WL) and reservation against cancellation (RAC). These statuses are not equivalent. Having a reservation record does not automatically mean having the expected seat or berth definitively secured. Source: IRCTC — terms and conditions.

Before travelling, check the train, date, station, class and updated status. If there is a waiting list or RAC, ask for an explanation of the conditions applying to the ticket and an alternative if your needs are not met. Do not treat every receipt as full confirmation.

Class and experience

A proposal should identify the contracted class and whether the leg is during the day or overnight. Do not assume every category offers the same layout, privacy, air conditioning or services.

If sleeping well is a priority, compare the overnight journey with an alternative that preserves rest. A train can be an interesting experience without needing to be included as an obligation in every itinerary.

Domestic flights

Confirm the baggage allowance for the specific leg, change rules and airports used. If tickets are independent, assess the connection buffer and who is responsible in the event of a delay. Do not plan a tight connection simply because scheduled times seem compatible.

When combining north and south, count air travel as a real part of the programme. Avoid selling the day of changing regions as though it were entirely free for visits.

Private vehicle

Ask about capacity for people and luggage, driver service, language and hours of availability. Driver and cultural guide are different roles and should appear separately where applicable.

Include breaks and confirm the attractions planned along the way. Driving time without stops cannot be presented as the total duration of a day that includes visits and meals.

On arrival

Check the meeting point and final access to the accommodation. In areas with restricted traffic, there may be a stretch on foot or in another vehicle. Communicate mobility needs so the solution is agreed in advance, not improvised with luggage in the street.

Next step: Request a proposal with clearly described transport, classes and connections, or compare the published India itineraries.
