How to plan an itinerary through Italy and Sicily
Plan an itinerary through Italy and Sicily around priorities, bases and pace. Compare the published offering and bring a clear request to your consultant.
A coherent itinerary through Italy begins with choices: region, interests, usable time and pace. Including as many cities as possible may produce more travel than experience. Sicily, in particular, deserves to be treated as a route in its own right, not a quick add-on between major mainland cities.
Choose a focus, not a list of photographs
If your main interest is archaeology and Mediterranean encounters, compare Sicilian centres. If Renaissance art is the priority, your time allocation will differ. Rome, Florence and Venice have editorial roles in this guide, but that does not make them inclusions in a package focused on Sicily.
Write down three priorities and one experience you could leave out. This list helps negotiate the pace: what deserves an in-depth visit, what can be observed on a walk and what can wait for another trip. Cultural information can then guide practical decisions.
A usable week: select your stops or follow a circuit
As a planning reference, a week may allow a regional selection or a circuit with a defined programme. It is not a promise of seeing the whole island. Distinguish calendar days from full available days: arrival, departure and hotel changes take up part of the trip.
In the west, Palermo and Monreale offer opportunities to explore architecture and urban life; Agrigento provides another archaeological perspective. In the southeast and east, Syracuse, Noto, Catania and Taormina address different interests. There is no obligation to fit them all into a trip of any duration.
Ten to fourteen days: explore more deeply before adding stops
With more time, consider longer stays, breaks and visits that require attention. An extra night at one base may be more useful than another city. If you want to combine the island with the mainland, check the journey and remove activities to preserve a realistic margin; more days do not eliminate distances.
The ranges above are editorial references, not universal minimums or guaranteed service durations. Dates, connections, mobility and interests affect the distribution.
Compare with the actual offering
The Essential Sicily itinerary is a published option to compare with your priorities. Read the programme, inclusions and conditions directly on the product page. Ask whether the activity that inspired your choice is guided, independent, optional or simply free time in the city.
Bring a clear request to your consultant
Tell us your possible dates, nights actually available, arrival and departure cities, interests and walking limitations. Add whether you prefer fewer hotel changes, more time in museums or breaks for rest. Consult the Italy itineraries as a starting point, without assuming that a desired extension is already booked. A useful quotation turns preferences into an explicit programme.

Compare with the circuit programme
Check the daily itinerary and services provided. Free time in Taormina does not include admission or a guided visit to the Ancient Theatre; activities on Etna and sailing around Ortigia depend on operating conditions.
