Frequently asked questions about trips to Nepal

Find answers to your main questions before planning your trip to Nepal.

Which visa requirements apply to my passport?

Tourist visa requirements depend on nationality and travel document. The Nepal Tourism Board describes visas on arrival at authorised entry points, but lists nationalities and travel documents requiring a visa in advance. Travellers with ordinary Brazilian passports generally need a tourist visa; do not assume the same procedure applies to every passport. Confirm eligibility, documentation and the applicable fee with Nepal’s immigration authorities or diplomatic mission before departure. A visa does not guarantee admission.

Is a yellow fever vaccination certificate required?

The CDC’s Nepal entry information, updated on 23 April 2025, lists a yellow fever vaccination requirement for travellers aged 9 months or older arriving from risk countries, including airport transits exceeding 12 hours in such countries. This depends on the route, not nationality alone. A properly completed International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis becomes valid 10 days after primary vaccination. Confirm current requirements with Nepal’s authorities and discuss individual medical considerations with a qualified health professional; this information is not medical clearance or a guarantee of entry.

What is the best time to travel to Nepal?

Spring, especially March to May, and autumn, September to November, usually offer good travel conditions. October and November generally bring clearer skies after the monsoon and good mountain visibility. Nepal can be visited throughout the year, but the climate varies considerably with altitude and region. Nepal Tourism Board — climate.

How many days are ideal for discovering Nepal?

For a broader trip combining the Kathmandu Valley with Pokhara or Chitwan, approximately 8 to 12 days can be a planning suggestion. This is not the duration of every published itinerary: some programmes last 4 or 5 days. Check the duration stated on each itinerary. Longer itineraries make it possible to combine all three regions, include Lumbini or Nagarkot, or enjoy mountain experiences. Longer treks require a dedicated programme.

Where should I go on a first trip to Nepal?

Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur introduce the country’s history, architecture and religious diversity. Pokhara combines lakes and views of the Annapurna range, while Chitwan offers nature and wildlife experiences. Nagarkot, Lumbini and other regions can complement the itinerary depending on the time available.

Do I need to go trekking to discover Nepal?

No. Although Nepal is one of the world’s leading trekking destinations, you can experience its culture, temples and Himalayan scenery without undertaking long hikes. Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, Bhaktapur and Nagarkot can feature in cultural and panoramic itineraries with different activity levels.

Can a Nepal itinerary be customised?

Yes. The duration, cities visited, hotel category, domestic flights, activity level and included experiences can be adapted. Nepal can also be combined with Bhutan, India and other Asian destinations.
